Finish a novel.

Yeah, same here. I have such a habit of starting a number of different stories and never finishing them. >.>

That's what I do. :\ I still work on them, I just... don't actually get them done.

NaNoWriMo is perfect for that - and starting very soon! Not sure if you're familiar with it already, so the short version if you're not: NAtional NOvel WRIting MOnth is November, and you write 50,000 words of prose on a novel in that time. Nothing beyond that, it's no contest, no worries about editing it or making it pretty yet, the point is to get the words out there and get a product - then go back and edit and finish it if you want.

It's perfect because it's that exact kick in the pants to just, finally, do it.

Ahhhhh, NaNo. I've never done it, but I've definitely heard of it-- though 50,000 words in a month is a little steep, I'd actually love to try it out someday, especially since I really like the tactic of just getting stuff down and not worrying about whether or not it's perfect until later. I've never had time to do it in the past, though.

[identity profile] catchingspirit.livejournal.com 2010-10-26 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
It'd be about 1,675 words/day on average. If you think about it? You probably do that or more in a good, solid rp post with its threads. The trick is whether you can do it every day, etc. XD

I've won it one year, haven't had time other years, miiiight try this year again, am still deciding.

[identity profile] banerry.livejournal.com 2010-10-29 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Good luck if you do! Who knows, I might try something similar (though without... actually entering, because everything I'd work on is stuff I've already done a bit of writing on already).

[identity profile] banerry.livejournal.com 2010-10-29 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
... Though thinking of it that way is interesting; I got curious and ran my comments from my last prose log through a word-counter and the total was 1437. XD I doubt I'd have time to crank out that much or more every day, but it's still an interesting thought!

[identity profile] catchingspirit.livejournal.com 2010-10-29 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee. Depending on outside commitments, it really is doable. The real trick is just to get the words out - don't bother about editing or polishing at all during it, just spill the words onto the page.

[identity profile] banerry.livejournal.com 2010-10-29 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
XD And that's definitely the problem I have. Ideas come to me really easily; it's actually getting them down that's hard.

[identity profile] catchingspirit.livejournal.com 2010-10-29 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Then think of it as practice!

:D?

[identity profile] catchingspirit.livejournal.com 2010-10-29 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
*tempt tempt* Besides, it's not like it's a ~big deal~ if you end up not making it. Could be fun to give it a shot and see how far you get. If nothing else, it gives you a good start on a project.

Or just say screw the rules and use it TO work on something you've already started. It's not a formal thing, really.

[identity profile] banerry.livejournal.com 2010-10-29 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's definitely what I'd do. XD Though to be fair I wouldn't enter the contest portion, I guess.
