Seeing America By Rail- Day 1

Okay, so it's the end of my first day, and I have literally no idea where we are right now. The last station I was aware of was Albany-Rensselaer in New York, but like I was telling [livejournal.com profile] rinhriveiel over Facebook, there aren't exactly road signs along train routes (unfortunately; it'd be really handy if there were!).

Pictures of today are somewhat boring from my POV, mostly because we're still in the northeast and it's all really similar to the stuff I see at home every day-- but I'm posting them anyway. There are a few from inside the train too, but not many yet. I'll take more on the bigger train (the Superliner) I'll be on tomorrow.

In Boston, walking to the train station from Au Bon Pain after having lunch. (It turns out they served lunch on the train too; oops.)

The train arriving and me boarding (the guy in the black sweater on the left in the second pic is my dad). Lower quality because they were taken with my mom's cell phone camera.

The little roomettes are really cool. They're tiny, but they don't actually feel as small as they are, if that makes sense. Granted, I just have my big suitcase and my messenger bag, but I still feel like I have a lot of room to store stuff. There's also a little cubbyhole thing across from the fold-down top bunk that I'm doing absolutely nothing with (though I might try to fit my suitcase in there if there's something like it on my two-night trips). For most of the trip I just had the two bunks folded down (the seats collapse and become the lower bunk) with my suitcase across from me and me sitting cross-legged. There's definitely enough room.

On the way out of Boston from Back Bay Station.

Just some random Massachusetts/New York countryside, taken from my roomette.

Some of the crap I brought with me. I like my suitcase.

I think this is all New York. You can tell it was raining.

My chin looks abnormally long. It's a little disturbing.

For the most part, today has been pretty much just sitting and looking at stuff out the window. The food's good; at dinner, I sat with a woman and we talked a loooooooot about animals and other things (but mostly animals), which was really fun. We exchanged email addresses so that we can send each other pictures of the different legs of our journeys (she's going to Dallas after we get to Chicago, and I'll be on my way to California). We also talked a little bit about family, and I felt like I sounded like a pathological liar when I got into some of our stuff ("my dad speaks Chinese, Russian, and Bulgarian and my mom speaks French and Bulgarian and also she used to work for the CIA!"), BECAUSE IT SOUNDS RIDICULOUS AND MADE-UP EVEN THOUGH IT'S TRUE.

Anyway, I'm up way past the time I was planning to be, so I'll post this and get off now. Tomorrow I'll get into Chicago at 9:45, see [livejournal.com profile] jeannette, and then head off on the California Zephyr at two!

it worked! from Mom

Just finished looking at the commentary and the pix--it only took about 45 minutes for everything to load (as you can imagine, that's no joke!). But it worked! What a blast, what fun to read your comments and look at the pictures. I loved the truck on the big bridge in probably NY. Or is it a bus..? I'm so tickled!
No wonder you felt like a pathological liar talking to the lady last night. For Pete's sake, I thought you'd figured out by now that your Dad and I made all that stuff up. Well, I guess not the French because you can speak French too. But Bulgarian??? What do you know from Bulgarian? I certainly don't. CIA? Ha! It doesn't even exist. Mom

It looks like a truck, but I don't really remember what it was.

YES VERY FUNNY.

Oh, and Jenny said she'd lend you her laptop if you wanted, so if you want to look at the next picture batch I put up you can use that so it won't take 45 minutes again!

[identity profile] rinhriveiel.livejournal.com 2011-04-02 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
lol it does, it does sound made-up. XD

I wld get bored of a trip that was all travelling, bc as much as I like travelling, I care about the *destination* (also I prefer flying, because I'm pretty much *obsessed* with airports and flight). But I know *you* will have a blast, and I'm thrilled for you! ^_^ It is an awesome idea, just not for people like me that get claustrophobic and would be like I WANT TO GET OUUUUUUUUUT~ lolz. I'd be like, "Sir, sir, cld we stop and stretch our legs?" *looks out window* "Yeah, in that cornfield in the middle of um... whereverwearenebraskaorsoemthing?"

[identity profile] banerry.livejournal.com 2011-04-02 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It isn't! Except the CIA stuff isn't anything too cool; she was just a researcher. Either that or a superspy who has to tell everyone she was a researcher. It'd be cool if it was the latter but it was probably the former.

Yeah, I pretty much like all parts of traveling, but I think I like randomly driving/riding around the best. XD I'd love to go on planes more because I really like them, but they also kind of freak me out.

[identity profile] rinhriveiel.livejournal.com 2011-04-02 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
And then I'd be like OH GAWD I'M IN NEBRASKA KILL ME NOW. XDDDDDDDDDDDDD /east coast prejudice

I can't wait to see your pictures once you get off the East Coast, though. That's when the really cool stuff will start. ^_^v
