I believe they were completely separate from the movie, but we didn't need the movie. We would've been fine without it...
If the animated specials had been made in lieu of the movie, this fandom would be more unified, no doubt about it. The story didn't need to be converted to live-action; I think the fact that they did it cheapens the source material... like a cartoon wasn't "good enough" for such an epic tale, and it had to be redone with "real" people. So I won't be spending money to see it for that reason, among others.
I'm hoping the specials will somehow end up being made, but the prospects look doubtful.
I know, right? :| I generally tend to like live-action movies/shows better than animation, but that doesn't mean I feel that all animated things would be ~*made better*~ if they were filmed instead of drawn.
How do you think it would unify the fandom, exactly?
So right. While it may or may not have been a driving factor in creating the movie, it still comes across that way. Avatar: The Last Airbender was, is, and will continue to be an astoundingly good cartoon... why couldn't it be left that way? The movie is going to taint the show's reputation because of all the problems associated with its production ( and perhaps the final product itself ), perceived or real.
I can't say with any certainty that the animated specials would unify the entire fandom, but the level of excitement would likely be higher than it is for the movie. Animated specials would mean several things: canon extensions of the story itself, direct involvement by Bryke, the return of our beloved voice actors, the characters' appearances retaining familiarity through animation and design... things that the movie has none of. The specials would arguably be more authentically Avatar than the live-action production.
Yes. Aside from movie-talk, the fandom has seemingly vanished, except for occasional 'shipping-wank flareups. Is this the fate of such a magnificent cartoon? :\
I do, too, but some people are determined to argue. Because the show is over, so is plot/characterization speculation, so all fans can seem to do nowadays is argue about what "should" have happened romantically.
That's... a little too much to expect from this fandom. There's no such thing as "'ship and let 'ship" ( the equivalent of "live and let live" ). People are still going on about how Zuko should've chosen Katara over Mai, how Katara is a pedo for kissing Aang, how Kataang is superior to everything because Bryke stated it was in the DNA of the show, how Suki should've died so Sokka could've been paired with [insert girl here]... it doesn't end.
Pretty much! XD I like Mai/Zuko too, but I'm not really interested enough to go searching for fanfic or anything. Not that I read much fanfic in the first place buuuuuuuuuut

Yep, that too! I'm generally just... pretty zen about most ships. XDno subject
Awesome. You realize how rare that zen is in our fandom, right? In many ways, you're quite special! :Dno subject
Haha, thanks. XDno subject
You're quite welcome. <3
