Seeing America By Rail- Day 4

This is the first day of cell phone photos, due to the aforementioned broken camera. I still think most of them came out pretty well, though!

No early-morning pictures this time-- this was taken a little after breakfast as we rolled through Nevada towards the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Hi.

It wasn't long before we could start to see the mountains in the distance. I was a little nervous because everyone had been talking about how they'd had such bad weather for the past week-- the couple I sat with at dinner the day before had said that on their way east across the range the train couldn't get through, so they loaded everybody on buses... which had to be turned back about halfway across. And it definitely still looked snowy...

We had no issues on our way up the mountain; all the snow was further up.

Truckee, California.

Eventually, we started encountering more snow at our elevation...

... But we had no problems getting though! I was pretty relieved, because while it would have been interesting and exciting to have had to be put up in a hotel for a few nights, I know in some states I'm not old enough to stay in one by myself and I had no idea if California/Nevada fell into that category.

After coming down out of the mountains, we went past some really pretty scenery and towns.

This is the kind of land I'd like to have someday.

It all reminded me of Ireland, a little bit.

We went along a more inland part of the San Francisco Bay a bit, which also looked really Irish to me in some areas.

Leaving the California Zephyr! We got to Emeryville at around 3:30, which was about forty minutes early. My next train wouldn't come until ten, so that kind of sucked for me.

I sat in here for about seven hours (people who have me added on plurk can attest to this; I complained a lot). It wasn't as bad as it could have been: I had all my stuff because I'm not checking any baggage on this trip, and so I read a lot. I could also plug in my computer/phone so I fooled around with pictures, and did other random stuff online. I read a billion pages of Homestuck; seeing the characters around all over the place made me somewhat interested in it, but I had never really bothered to check it out before because it was described as a "webcomic" and I don't really like comic format-- but I guess it's a different sort of comic, without panels/speech bubbles/etc. I even uploaded an icon of it just for this entry, because I liked the expression.

... Anyway. So I sat around, and the Coast Starlight-- my next train-- was running about twenty minutes late for basically the entire time. At around 10:30 they finally sent us outside to wait for it because it was "almost here", and I ended up standing around for about half an hour more because they were further delayed by adding on another sleeper car. By the time it came I was exhausted and didn't even try to do anything with my pictures before conking out.

That's all for yesterday; more on today coming this evening/tomorrow morning.

Well, only some of them..... I'm glad it worked, and the pics did come out pretty well. Looks like all right weather.

those trains DO look pretty much like BUILDINGS...

[identity profile] banerry.livejournal.com 2011-04-05 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
They look even bigger in real life!

Aw, is that all you have of Nevada?  :(

with the right journal this time

[identity profile] banerry.livejournal.com 2011-04-05 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately. 8( I was asleep for a lot of it!

It would've been all right to reply with the RP journal!

Maybe you'll catch all that desert on the way back home?

BUT I'M NITPICKY D8

[identity profile] banerry.livejournal.com 2011-04-05 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going back home along the northmost part of the country, so I won't-- but I love the desert, so someday I'll have to visit again and take more Nevada pictures!

IT'S OKAY, REALLY!

[identity profile] fire-lord-azula.livejournal.com 2011-04-05 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
You are?  Awww again!

It'll be nice for you to see even more states and different scenery, but I was looking forward to the Nevada pictures.  I've only been to the northern part of the state once (Reno, Tahoe, and Virginia City), so it would've been great to see the northeastern landscape.

I've been following your pictures from the start, and you're getting some really nice shots!

Nevada should've had more pictures than Utah, but oh well.

Do come back, if you can!  Plenty of desert for you to love.

BUT BUT BUT

[identity profile] banerry.livejournal.com 2011-04-05 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Reno is one of the cities we passed through, I think-- I took a picture or too, but they didn't come out well so I deleted them.

I'm glad you like the pictures EVEN IF THEY AREN'T NEVADA, and hope you enjoy the rest too! ♥

I INSIST IT'S FINE.

[identity profile] fire-lord-azula.livejournal.com 2011-04-05 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
That's all right.  If they didn't come out, there's not much that can be done.  You probably did pass through Reno; it's not far from Tahoe.

Of course I am!  I DO HAVE TO ADVOCATE MY STATE, THOUGH.  ;)  I'm sure I will!  You'll be going to a lot of places I haven't been.  Did you get anything of Indiana?  I didn't see it mentioned.

BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT

[identity profile] banerry.livejournal.com 2011-04-05 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. 8( On my second day (http://banerry.livejournal.com/157951.html) we went through Waterloo, Elkhart, and South Bend; I think I was asleep for most of that too, and it was also dark. The first pictures I got that day were after it had just started to get light, and we were already in Illinois by that point. On my way back east out of Chicago on the 7th, though, I'll go through Gary, Valparaiso, South Bend and Elkhart again, Fort Wayne, and Waterloo. We leave Chicago at 6:40PM so it might be dark by the time we get to Indiana, but we'll see!

I guess California must have seemed pretty much of a relief after all that snow! Imagine doing the Rockies in a wagon train, which would presumably mean you couldn't sleep through virtually ANY of the tough parts! Too bad you had all that luggage and couldn't venture forth into the Bay Area while in CA. Guess you will just have to go back. I agree with you that much of the scenery on today's roster looked much like Ireland (een though I have never actually been to Ireland!) I would not have expected that! Love, Aunt Cyndy

I definitely would like to go back to this area someday and spend more time there. I'll have to take pictures of that, too! :P
