Seeing America By Rail- Day 4

This is the first day of cell phone photos, due to the aforementioned broken camera. I still think most of them came out pretty well, though!

No early-morning pictures this time-- this was taken a little after breakfast as we rolled through Nevada towards the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Hi.

It wasn't long before we could start to see the mountains in the distance. I was a little nervous because everyone had been talking about how they'd had such bad weather for the past week-- the couple I sat with at dinner the day before had said that on their way east across the range the train couldn't get through, so they loaded everybody on buses... which had to be turned back about halfway across. And it definitely still looked snowy...

We had no issues on our way up the mountain; all the snow was further up.

Truckee, California.

Eventually, we started encountering more snow at our elevation...

... But we had no problems getting though! I was pretty relieved, because while it would have been interesting and exciting to have had to be put up in a hotel for a few nights, I know in some states I'm not old enough to stay in one by myself and I had no idea if California/Nevada fell into that category.

After coming down out of the mountains, we went past some really pretty scenery and towns.

This is the kind of land I'd like to have someday.

It all reminded me of Ireland, a little bit.

We went along a more inland part of the San Francisco Bay a bit, which also looked really Irish to me in some areas.

Leaving the California Zephyr! We got to Emeryville at around 3:30, which was about forty minutes early. My next train wouldn't come until ten, so that kind of sucked for me.

I sat in here for about seven hours (people who have me added on plurk can attest to this; I complained a lot). It wasn't as bad as it could have been: I had all my stuff because I'm not checking any baggage on this trip, and so I read a lot. I could also plug in my computer/phone so I fooled around with pictures, and did other random stuff online. I read a billion pages of Homestuck; seeing the characters around all over the place made me somewhat interested in it, but I had never really bothered to check it out before because it was described as a "webcomic" and I don't really like comic format-- but I guess it's a different sort of comic, without panels/speech bubbles/etc. I even uploaded an icon of it just for this entry, because I liked the expression.

... Anyway. So I sat around, and the Coast Starlight-- my next train-- was running about twenty minutes late for basically the entire time. At around 10:30 they finally sent us outside to wait for it because it was "almost here", and I ended up standing around for about half an hour more because they were further delayed by adding on another sleeper car. By the time it came I was exhausted and didn't even try to do anything with my pictures before conking out.

That's all for yesterday; more on today coming this evening/tomorrow morning.
