Yesterday's pictures, coming somewhat on time (?) for once!

image-heavy! )

I was awake for the very first stop in North Dakota too, but since we were about two hours behind schedule, it was already dark and I didn't get any pictures.
corknut: (stock- on the wire)
We're starting to head back east now; this day covers northern California through part of Washington state.

Then night came.
corknut: (homestuck- excitement!)
This is the first day of cell phone photos, due to the aforementioned broken camera. I still think most of them came out pretty well, though!

image-heavy! )

That's all for yesterday; more on today coming this evening/tomorrow morning.
corknut: (stock- venture)
Sorry this entry is so late! LJ's been down for a lot of today, so I haven't gotten a chance to post. Anyway, onward!

image-heavy! )

After that my camera broke and I couldn't fix it myself, so future pictures will be cell phone quality.
corknut: (stock- up and ready)
Sorry I didn't post this last night; we went through a semi-dead area in the evening and I couldn't upload the pictures.

Here we get into the more interesting stuff, IMHO-- we got off the east coast and into the midwest, and I walked around Chicago with [livejournal.com profile] jeannette for a few hours!

image-heavy! )

That's it for yesterday's pictures! I'll try to post today's tonight, but if we go through another dead area it'll have to wait until tomorrow.
corknut: (stock- autumn day)
Okay, so it's the end of my first day, and I have literally no idea where we are right now. The last station I was aware of was Albany-Rensselaer in New York, but like I was telling [livejournal.com profile] rinhriveiel over Facebook, there aren't exactly road signs along train routes (unfortunately; it'd be really handy if there were!).

Pictures of today are somewhat boring from my POV, mostly because we're still in the northeast and it's all really similar to the stuff I see at home every day-- but I'm posting them anyway. There are a few from inside the train too, but not many yet. I'll take more on the bigger train (the Superliner) I'll be on tomorrow.

image-heavy! )

For the most part, today has been pretty much just sitting and looking at stuff out the window. The food's good; at dinner, I sat with a woman and we talked a loooooooot about animals and other things (but mostly animals), which was really fun. We exchanged email addresses so that we can send each other pictures of the different legs of our journeys (she's going to Dallas after we get to Chicago, and I'll be on my way to California). We also talked a little bit about family, and I felt like I sounded like a pathological liar when I got into some of our stuff ("my dad speaks Chinese, Russian, and Bulgarian and my mom speaks French and Bulgarian and also she used to work for the CIA!"), BECAUSE IT SOUNDS RIDICULOUS AND MADE-UP EVEN THOUGH IT'S TRUE.

Anyway, I'm up way past the time I was planning to be, so I'll post this and get off now. Tomorrow I'll get into Chicago at 9:45, see [livejournal.com profile] jeannette, and then head off on the California Zephyr at two!

lolwat.

So, every time I try to go to a plurk page-- including my own-- I get the message "[username] has been banned". I'm guessing this is a glitch, or has Plurk gone on a massive banning spree?
corknut: (stock- where to?)
Snip for three maps )

I might have left off a few European countries that I don't remember having been to (we lived in Germany when I was little and drove all over the continent then), but I'm pretty sure I have everything down. As for the states, I'm going to add a lot more to that list next month. :P Overall, though, I'd love to travel more-- particularly in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific.

The Rules:
1. People who have been tagged must write the answers on their blog and replace any question they dislike with a new, original question.
2. Tag eight people. Don't refuse to do that. Don't tag who tagged you. SCREW THIS; I HATE TAGGING PEOPLE IN MEMES. Do it if you want; don't do it if you don't.

this is actually kind of boring! )
corknut: (stock- let's go!)
So! In early April (the first to the eighth), I'm going to be taking a train trip across the country. I'm ridiculously excited and I've been spending forever preparing for this, and because I had nothing better to do this afternoon, I put together a list of the route I'll be taking. If any of you online people live in any of these places, I'll wave at your city from my window. :P

Can it be April yet?

Because I know I have at least a couple Criminal Minds fans on my flist, it's survey time! Tell me your opinion on...

- the spookiest episode
- the spookiest scene (not necessarily from that episode, but it can be)

Feel free to link to clips if you can find any.

Anyone else?

I finished series five of the new Doctor Who today-- and after watching "Vincent and the Doctor" last night, I... legit cannot stop thinking about how awesome it was (a few people on Plurk can attest to this). It's a time-travel episode in which the main characters go back and meet Vincent Van Gogh-- and the last few minutes even made my mom cry, and she isn't a fan of sci-fi and thus doesn't watch the show. I've been trying to find a link just to that bit so I can post it here, but no cigar.

While I did really like the metaphor of the entire plot (and I also loved the scene where Amy, Vincent, and the Doctor are lying on the grass and the sky above them transforms into his painting The Starry Night), I won't describe the entire episode because really, what made it for me was the ending. After spending time living with, getting to know, and becoming close to Van Gogh, and seeing just how misunderstood and pushed aside he was in his own time, the Doctor and his current companion bring him onto the TARDIS and take him to 2010's Musée d'Orsay... where there's an exhibition of all his paintings, finally being viewed and appreciated. They talk to a tour guide, who says that he believes that Van Gogh is not only the best artist of all time, but one of the best people of all time-- and Vincent just starts crying. Looking around at reviews online, there's definitely a segment of the fandom that thought the scene was overly sappy, but... I don't know. There was just something so incredibly moving about it for me. And like I said, I cannot. Get it out. Of my head. It's something that really would be wonderful to be able to do in real life-- take historical figures who were particularly tortured or unjustly maligned, and bring them into the future to say, "Look! See! We appreciate you! No matter what happened to you in your time, you weren't forgotten, and now you're going to be loved forever."

Definitely my favorite episode of the series-- old and new. Even better than "Midnight"... just for that ending.

I'm sure LJ and Samsung have no ulterior motives for asking this. None at all.

1. Create a graphic (200 x 200 max size) to represent your personal "candy". It should have your username on it, but otherwise can feature whatever you want. Make it something special since it's self-representative.

2. Make a post with the subject "trick or treat?". Put your "candy" somewhere in it, and be sure to repost these instructions.

3. Then, go around other people's LJs and reply to them with either "trick" or "treat". If you reply with "trick", they will give you an LJ dare that you have to perform before taking their candy. If you're too wimpy for that, simply say "treat" and take their candy.

4. List all your collected candies in your original "trick or treat?" post to show off your collection!

Pretty positive, really. I love shopping for school supplies, I love putting my backpack together and arranging my notebooks, and I love using all-new materials. High school made up some of my best years, so that's where the most positive associations lie, but even though I'm taking time off of college because of burn-out my experience there was hardly all negative. I hope that when I end up going back, I'll accumulate even more good memories to add to that.
